Gala Dinner
Castel Sant’ Angelo
Conference delegates and Partners' Program participants will be transferred on NG buses to enjoy an unforgettable and exquisite Gala Dinner, as guests of our main supporter ENI, in one of the most famous tourist attractions of the Eternal City: Castel Sant’ Angelo.
Its history
Built by Emperor Adrian to become his mausoleum, Castel Sant’ Angelo was started in 123 AD and held the mortal remains of the members of the imperial dynasty up to Caracalla. The original building was very different from the one existing today. It was turned into a castle around the 10thcentury, and in 1277 ownership passed to the Vatican, which connected it to the Vatican walls through the famous raised passageway. (This is a long fortified corridor which enabled the passage of the Popes from the Vatican Palaces to the castle. In time the building was utilized as a fortress and as a dungeon where tortures were inflicted.)
The name of Castel Sant’ Angelo traces back to the 12th century and stems from an ancient legend that tells the story of the plague in Rome in the year 590; according to history the plague finished thanks to an angel who appeared and settled on the mausoleum and put away his sword in sheath to show that the favour had been granted. To keep memory of this event not only was the name of the monument changed, but a statue was placed on top of the castle in honour of the angel.

Opera
Tosca story
La Tosca Opera has been written by Giacomo Puccini, born in Lucca in 1588, He composed many other successful operas too. Giacomo Puccini died in 1924 in Bruxelles. La Tosca describes the story of two people who are in love (Tosca and Cavaradossi) in 1800. The Opera is divided into three acts. Act I: the Neapolitan army of Ferdinando IV of Borbone profited from the Napoleonic army’s absence to topple the Republic and prosecute its representatives. Among those was Cesare Angelotti, who escaped from prison and sought refuge with Cavaradossi and Tosca. Act II: while Scarpia was having dinner at Palazzo Farenese, he had Mario Cavaradossi and Tosca called to interrogate them. Scarpia was sure that Mario was covering for Angelotti and shut him up in the torture room. Thus, by taking advantage of Tosca’s feelings, Scarpia hoped to make her talk. In fact, when she heard Mario’s moans she revealed where Angelotti was hidden, on condition that she and her boyfriend could leave the country with no problems. The Baron ordered Tosca to follow him, and when they were alone he blackmailed her saying that he would have made a fake execution if she had stayed with him. As soon as Scarpia gave the order to Spoletta to make a fake execution, Tosca took a knife and killed him by stabbing him in his heart while the baron was having dinner. Act III: Tosca explained the situation to Mario. But when the time for the execution came, a blow came off from the platoon and Cavaradossi was killed. Tosca, then, broken-hearted, watched the policemen coming towards her, and decided to throw herself from the bastion of the Castel Sant`Angelo, asking for God’s justice.
